Broken headphones

September 2, 2009 by dberenstein

Today my headphones in the office are broken (the left ear headphone is not sounding music). So I need a new (inexpensive) pair of headphones for my computer to pass away the days while I work. I don’t like the ear bud versions, so don’t even suggest those. They feel like an insect crawling in my ears and I find them really uncomfortable.

Any recommendations?

Once you go Sennheiser, you’ll never go back.

Best sounding head phones are usually open or semi-open, meaning that some sound will propagate outwards as well as inwards. Are there other people in the room who would be disturbed / distracted by music coming out of your head phones? I suggest HD-555 if there aren’t, HD-280 if there are. Both high quality and reasonably inexpensive.

if you don’t dislike the ’80s aesthetic the koss porta pro will give you the most bang for the buck.

You are a physicist. Fix the old headphones instead of buying new ones :-P

Better yet, convince some experimental physics grad student to do it for you ;-)

Grado SR60. They will run you around $50 and so far they’re the best headphones I have ever owned… They look/sound awesome and the cord is extra long so you can move around.

If you are a member of a frequent fliers program then some of the big airlines, e.g. the Star Alliance program, have a decent set of noise cancelling headphones that you can spend your air-miles on. I got a pair of Audio-Technica ones that way and they are pretty good.

I don’t know if you can afford USD 4 or so

I had to buy several USD 10 headphones for various people recently. For USD 10 you can already get headphones with a nice mic, and if you double the price, there’s also a camera in it.

Yes, the things in the ears are uncomfortable. Having them from MP3 players, too. ;-)

“I don’t like the ear bud versions”. Neither do I, they drive me crazy.

I bought a inexpensive pair of Koss headphones 15 years ago and the worked perfectly well until a member of my family decided to do some destructive testing
